Inspiration Series
The series was inspired by “the thief’s” glazing.
This series has a bit of a story. I work out of a community studio, and a few months ago some of the plates I had been throwing went missing. As I was making such a large quantity of plates, I thought nothing of it. Surely I had just misscounted? Theft is not typically a problem at my wonderful studio. But, a several other people had some pieces go missing too.
Well, a few weeks later, a very apologetic parent showed up and said that their small child had been a student in the studio. While working independently, their child had taken some pieces that were not hers and glazed them. The parent returned all of the pieces that were taken, and while many of them looked like an 11 year old had glazed them, a few of them looked done by a savant! One of my plates was one of those. I laughed it off, and I like to think the youngster got a memorable lesson on stealing. And that plate? Well it sits on my bathroom sink holding my tooth brush and soap and it sparks a chuckle in me every couple of days.
The glaze pattern of this series was inspired by “the thief’s” glazing work. It’s a discussion of my intermittent, pessimistic belief that there are no original thoughts left in the world. Daily, we are bombarded with images and ideas. As an artist, sometimes it can feel like I have nothing to contribute to the world. But, every once in a while something exciting comes out of somewhere unexpected and inspires you to create, hypersaturation be damned!
